# Expiry and closing

> An expired license blocks spending. A closed workspace can be restored for 60 days

A paid workspace has a license expiry. Expiry and closing are different. Expiry blocks spending. Closing is the owner taking the workspace out of the switcher.

## What expiry blocks

When the license expiry is in the past, spending in that workspace stops. There is no separate frozen flag. The check is the expiry timestamp against now.

| Item | After expiry |
| - | - |
| Spending this workspace's credits | Blocked. The message asks an admin to renew, or tells you to switch to an activated workspace |
| Chats, files, members | Kept |
| Settings | Still open, so you can renew and read history |
| Memberships | Unchanged. Renewal does not require new invites |

A member can switch, from the sidebar, to another workspace that is still open, including the free one created at signup, and spend that pool instead.

## How renewal dates are computed

```
new expiry = max(now, previous expiry) + one cycle
```

| Case | Result |
| - | - |
| Renew before expiry | Time is added after the previous expiry. Remaining days are kept |
| Renew after expiry | Time starts today |

A month is 30 days. A year is 365 days. A renewal can switch between monthly and yearly. New credits are added to the balance already in the pool. They do not replace it. One payment number is applied once.

## Close

The owner closes the workspace from workspace settings.

* Members lose access immediately.
* The owner can restore it for **60 days**. Time that billing skipped while it was closed is added back, so restore does not charge a skipped payment at once.
* After 60 days, continuous-payment agreements for this workspace are cancelled, and unused license time is frozen. The workspace row remains. Chats and the credit pool still point at it.

The workspace created for the account at signup cannot be closed. The free plan depends on it.

Closing is not deleting the account, and it is not canceling a subscription. Canceling is on [Subscription plans](/en/documentation/billing/subscription-plans.md).

## Failures

| What you see | Why | What to do |
| - | - | - |
| Members are told the plan expired | The license is past | The owner renews, or you switch to another workspace |
| You paid and the plan did not change | Activation is still retrying | Check this workspace's plan again shortly |
| The new expiry looks short | An early renewal stacks on the old expiry | Count the days that were already left. The total is not shorter |
| Credits did not arrive | That payment number was already applied | Read this workspace's credit ledger |
| You want to close the signup workspace | The account workspace cannot be closed | Close a workspace you created later |

## FAQ

> **What if I do not renew?**

> **How is closing different from expiry?**
>
> Expiry only blocks spending. The workspace stays in the switcher. Closing is the owner putting it away. It can be restored for 60 days.

> **Can an admin renew?**
>
